April 1st Tax Foreclosure Message

April 1st is a special day this year. It’s Easter, it’s Passover, it’s April Fool’s Day, it’s Veterans Day in Argentina (April Fool’s! Argentina’s Veterans Day is April 2nd!). And hey, it’s also the legally listed day of tax foreclosure in Michigan and Wayne County.

This video provides a quick update on the foreclosure situation, an overview of a new program by the Wayne County Land Bank to take occupied homes out of the auction (including some awesomely harsh language it uses to condemn the foreclosure process), and concludes with an underscoring of how we need to fully understand the financial system behind delinquent tax borrowing and collection — the Delinquent Tax Revolving Fund — that magically creates more money for the county when people pay their taxes late and lose their properties to foreclosure.

To that end, it ends with two clips of Wayne County Executive Warren Evans — one calling reliance on the delinquent tax surpluses “blood money,” and the other talking about how they continue to use it.

I didn’t have time to add anything to the green screen, but that gives an opportunity to finally let the green screen speak for itself as a piece of green fabric. Maybe I’ll update it, maybe not.
