State of Foreclosure: The Trashout

Producer Angela Shelley added a new word to the vernacular when she discovered that “trashouts” were happening to foreclosed homes. This story was the lead in Shelley’s eye-opening “State of Foreclosure” program. It was the first time viewers ever heard of — much less saw — a “trashout” — revealing the fast-paced, dirty work of contractors hired by banks and mortgage companies to empty out homes of the things people leave behing. Produced at the height of the devastating economic crisis, this show went viral and was re-broadcast on “Oprah” and other national news and talk shows.
